‘The Purge: Election Year’ Takes its Violence to the Streets

The Purge has come a long way since it was first released in 2013. The movie was a surprise hit, which led to a sequel being released the next year, referred to as The Purge: Anarchy. Interestingly, the sequel too did rather well which has led to the release of The Purge: Election Year. The success of the prequels has led to the creation of The Purge franchise, and it is only logical for viewers to expect it to eventually hit a snag. Keeping this in mind, here is an in-depth review of The Purge: Election Year and whether or not it hits all the right notes.

For starters, the movie has been made in such way to get viewers riled up, which the latest installment does rather well. Moreover, the movie is also designed to appeal to the audience’s most predatory instincts, which is why it does relatively well this time around too.

The movie starts off with a family being bound and gagged, while a masked individual tries to lighten to the mood by playing tunes from his ‘Purge playlist’. The very same killer would have been considered to be a psychopath if it were any other film, but seeing how the Purge movies work, and how in its universe people are given the opportunity to go on a killing spree, it is actually just another day at the office.

In the very next scene, the audience is taken to another Purge that took place exactly nineteen years after the first one. During the purge, innocents are hiding in a bodega, and they are surrounded by tartly teenagers armed to the teeth. After watching The Purge: Election Year, it makes perfect sense as to why Independence Day: Resurgence is not something people can connect with anymore, and they rather prefer the grittiness and violence which is what The Purge franchise is all about.

For this installment, the movie revolves around a new protagonist, the ideal presidential candidate who could bring about an end to The Purge once and for all. Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) is the very same girl from the opening scene, and being a survivor, she hopes that no one else has to suffer the fate that she and her family had to endure. Seeing how a majority of citizens support her, the U.S government, which has been revived as the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA), has decided to get rid of her on Purge Night.

That being said, the movie is mostly lacking due to bad casting choices. As for the plot of the movie, it does not do much apart from taking the violence up a notch. Never has there been a protagonist that has turned out to be a ‘purger’, which only comes to show the movie lacks in terms of exploring new stories. However, what The Purge: Election Year does well is its ability to portray the political ruling class encouraging a religion of destruction, all the while pretending that it is for the greater good.
