10 Most Terrifying Horror Movies of the Past 10 Years

The horror genre of movies is a hotbed for creative filmmakers, largely because of their relatively miniscule budgets and the potential to apply loads of creative imagination to the plot. However, this is also the reason why most movies in this genre are crap and definitely not worth watching. We’re now 15 years into the new millennium, and while the horror genre is still pretty much dross, it’s also been an exciting time for scary-movie fans. With improvements in technology and a new wave of filmmakers emerging with smart new takes on how to make you scream, the horror movie genre is now better than ever before.

So, after much searching, comparing and arguing, we’ve finally come up with a list of 10 most terrifying horror movies of the past ten years:

  1. Antichrist (2009)

 

Antichrist is the story of a couple losing their son who unfortunately falls out of a window to his untimely demise. The mother’s grief consigns her to hospital, but her therapist husband brings her back with the intent of treating her himself. To confront her fears, they leave their house to live inside a cabin in the woods where something untold had happened the previous summer. The film details acts of lustful cruelty as the man and woman witness the unfolding of the darker side of nature.

  1. The Woman in Black (2012)

 

Arthur Kipps, a lawyer in London, still grieves the death of his beloved wife even after four years of her death during the delivery of their son. His employer, however, is out of his wits and gives him a last chance to improve his behavior and keep his job. He is assigned to travel to a remote village to examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh House that belonged to the recently deceased Mrs. Drablow. As the story unfolds, Arthur goes to the isolated manor and soon discovers that the house is haunted by the vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black. He also learns that the woman lost her son and she seeks revenge by taking the children of the scared locals.

  1. Insidious (2010)

Insidious is a gripping story of family in search of help for their son, Dalton, who fell into a coma-like-sleep after a mysterious incident in the attic. Little do they know that there is more to this endless sleep that meets the eyes as they explore the paranormal, rediscover the past, and they key to getting their son back once and for all.

  1. The Midnight Meat Train (2008)

The Midnight Meat Train is the story of a photographer, Leon, who’s waiting for a chance to break into the business of photography. His girlfriend contacts and arranges a meeting for him with a successful owner of an art gallery, Susan Hoff. She, however, rejects Leon and asks him to improve the quality of his photos. The dejected Leon wanders the street, taking pictures with his camera, and he follows three punks down a subway station. The gang attacks a young woman and Leon defends her. The next morning, Leon discovers that the woman is missing. He goes to the police station, where detectives don’t pay heed to his statement. However, Leon becomes obsessed to find what happened to the stranger and returns to the subway station. There he realizes the awful reality of the station when he meets a butcher and suspects him to be a murderer, and thus, begins his journey into the darkness.

  1. Paranormal Activity (2007)

The movie gives the impression of being shot by the characters in the movie themselves. It depicts the life of a young, middle class couple after they move into a suburban tract house. They become increasingly disturbed by a demonic presence that is most active in the middle of the night, especially when they sleep, or try to.

  1. Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Christine Brown is a loans officer at a bank. She’s in competition with a competent colleague for an assistant manager position. To increase her status in the eyes of his boss, she refuses a time extension on a loan to an old woman, who now faces foreclosure and the loss of her house. In retaliation, the old woman places a curse on Christine, which she subsequently learns, will result in her going to hell in a few days time. She tries to rid herself of the demon with the help of a psychic, but faces several hurdles in the attempt.

  1. The Mist (2007)

A violent storm hits a town in Maine and then an approaching cloud of mist appears the next morning. As the mist quickly envelops the area, a group of people get trapped in a local grocery store, among them, the artist David Drayton and his five-year-old son. The people soon discover that within the mist lives numerous species of horrific, unworldly creatures that entered through an inter-dimensional rift, most possibly caused by a project on a nearby military base named “Project Arrowhead”. As the world around them turns into a literal hell, the horrified citizens try desperately to survive this apocalyptic disaster.

  1. The Witch (2015)

The Witch is the story of a family torn apart by witchcraft, black magic and possession. The family comprises William and Katherine and their five children leading a devout Christian life. Their newborn son, however, mysteriously vanishes one day and their crops start to dry out, after which the family begins to turn on one another. It’s a chilling portrait of a family fighting their own fears and anxieties, leading them to become prey for a despicable evil entity.

  1. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

The Cabin in the Woods is the story of five friends who prepare for a trip to a remote cabin. They arrive to find that they are quite isolated with no means of communicating with the outside world. They find an odd assortment of relics and curios, but when one of the women reads from a book, she awakens a family of deadly zombie killers. However, there’s far more going on than meets the eye.

  1. The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring is a true story about the family of Carolyn and Roger Perron, who move into a dilapidated Rhode Island farm house. Soon strange things start happening with escalating nightmarish terror. In desperation, Carolyn contacts the noted paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to examine the house. The Warrens discover that the whole area is steeped in a satanic haunting that is targeting the Perron family wherever they go. To stop this evil, the Warrens will have to call upon all their skills and spiritual strength to defeat this spectral menace at its source that threatens to destroy everyone involved.

Though we said that we’ll only be posting a list of ten most terrifying movies, it would be injustice to exclude one movie which we think should make the list. Consider it a bonus!

[Bonus] The Orphanage (2007)

 

Laura, a former orphan, raises her adopted son Simon together with her husband. She later brings her family back to her childhood home, a former orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend. Later on she sees that friend wearing a mask, and also discovers that her son has disappeared. She also feels the presence of other people in the house and, months later, invites a team of parapsychologists to try to unravel the mystery.
